the ROME – The Community of Sant’egidio launched an appeal to Institutions, but also to all citizens, leaving only the most fragile people in these hours of emergency imposed by the coronavirus. As is well known, those most at risk these days are certainly the elderly, of advanced age, but also homeless people, sick people or those with disabilities. On all of them also has another serious danger: the isolation. Just think about that, especially in the large Italian cities, like Rome or Milan, the rate of people living alone touches the 45 percent of the population.
“All the citizens can do their part”. “please Help us, – says the appeal of the Community of Sant’egidio – to expand the monitoring of older people and people with disabilities that we follow, not with the possibility to visit, through telephone calls, letters, audio and video messages, sent specifically to those who live in institutions. Also offer to carry the groceries home – continues the appeal – is an action that is valuable to limit the discomfort of those who are more alone and vulnerable. In these days, our volunteers will continue to visit, even the people who live on the street and bringing them not only food but also products which are useful to protect themselves from the infection (such as gel and wipes to sanitize)”.
The canteens remain open. “our soup-kitchens for the poor – you can still read the document spread – remain open by observing the precautionary measures as regards the limited number of people, the distance between them and the hygiene, but ensuring that this service is essential for those at risk, due to less circulation, to receive less aid and support, starting from the homeless. If the infection moves us away physically and solidarity unites us, makes us stronger in the face of fear and helps to protect us. Anyone who wants to can contribute financially, or by collecting the kinds of useful, like food, gels, sanitisers, and paper towels.
