MOURNING in the world of medicine: died last Sunday, because of a sudden illness while he was abroad, the Professor Dino Amadori, a master of Italian Oncology, scientific director emeritus of the Institute of romagna for the study and treatment of tumors (Irst-Irccs, Meldola (Forlì-Cesena) and president of the Oncology Institute of Romagna (Ior).
Oncologist and researcher of international fame, Born in Santa Sofia, province of Forlì, Dino Amadori, had 83 years and he was an oncologist and researcher, among the most well-known and respected in Italy and abroad. After graduating with honors from the University of Bologna in 1961, a period in which the Romagna region is distinguished for the high mortality linked to the spread of tumors among its inhabitants, has dedicated his personal and professional life to the fight against cancer, not only providing medical assistance to cancer patients, but also by engaging in awareness-raising activities on the theme of prevention. “The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (Aiom) expresses its deepest condolences,” the authors wrote Giordano Beretta and Massimo Di Maio, respectively the president and secretary Aiom: “his pioneering activity has resulted in assistance with research and clinical research with laboratory research, without ever forgetting that the patients remain the main focus of our activities. His abundant scientific production, and his commitment are an example for young people, also for the ability to bind firmly solidarity and medical research”.
The Oncological Institute of Romagna Driven by the desire to conduct these activities on a larger scale, together with Salvatore Lombardo, the son of one of his patients, he founded in 1979, the Oncology Institute of Romagna, a co-op that would have been added to the public facilities “to pursue the general interest of the community to promote human and social integration of citizens through the management of health and social services and education and, in particular, through the action of prevention, care and rehabilitation of cancer and scientific research.”
The Cancer Registry of Romagna, a Few years later, in 1984, wanting to provide a valuable support to studies in the field of oncology, decides to create the Cancer Registry of Romagna to collect, process and disseminate in a systematic way information relating to cancers prevalent in that specific population: in particular, the data had to relate to the incidence (i.e. the number of new cases that appear in a given time period), mortality, survival and prevalence (i.e. the number of individuals who, at a given time, have the disease). The aim was to improve the clinical and epidemiological studies, and to offer further possibilities of prevention and early diagnosis.
a Member of the leading scientific societies the Point of reference in the field of oncology, Dino Amadori has been a member of the main national and international scientific societies of the sector, and has published more than 380 scientific articles. From 1997 to 1999, he was President of the Aiom and from 1998 to 2001, he was part of the Single Commission of the Drug at the Ministry of Health. In addition, he was President of the Commission of Oncology of the Regional Emilia-Romagna and of the Ethics Committee of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
The Institute of Romagna for the Study and Treatment of Cancer In 1988, on the occasion of the meeting of the volunteers of the Oncology Institute of Romagna, launches the idea of giving life in Romagna as an institution devoted to the care and scientific research: the idea that will, after a long journey, to the construction of the Institute of Romagna for the Study and Treatment of Tumors (Irst) in Meldola. It is, in fact, in 2007 the center was inaugurated and represents a structure of excellence and at the forefront at the national level, the objective of which is to promote a close interconnection between research and care. The Institute works to meet the needs in cancer, providing the scientific support in the framework of the nursing process, and in April 2012, has also achieved recognition in the Institution of Hospitalisation and Scientific Care (IRCCS).
