At 7. November of 2016, died at Leonard Cohen at the age of 82 years. Though the canadian Songwriter, Poet and Ironist had announced his impending death a few months earlier in a farewell letter to his old girlfriend, Marianne Ihlen, surprised the message of Cohen’s sudden death. Because Leonard Cohen was experiencing a creative boom. In September 2016, the Album “You Want It Darker” was one of the best in his long Oeuvre, even the notorious worked slowly, pen is already on the successor work.
Now, for “You Want It Darker” is the song played appeared sketches under the title “Thanks for the Dance”. A lot of raw material, Cohen’s son and producer Adam Cohen was not available. Just once 29 minutes has become a short “Thanks for the Dance”. The scarce “Moving On” it can be assumed that the vocal track in the Cut-&-Paste procedure has been artificially extended, so that this could be the brand expanded to a piece of music.
An Album that touches on
In General, one is projects are skeptical that the discographies of late musicians and musicians posthumously be extended: Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and John Lennon are used as negative examples. “Thanks for the Dance” but in the same way as in, “You Want It Darker”. Because Adam Cohen reconciled the voice of his father, with a modern, but appropriate Sound Design, reaching the new Songs a harrowing poignancy.
“Thanks for the Dance” desperate Leonard Cohen whether Turbo-capitalism, anti-Semitism and nationalism. What happens with the heart, he asks himself in the opening track, “Happens to the Heart”, when love and Faith are disappointed again and again?

“Puppets” complained to Cohen, the powerlessness of the people, which led the world in 1939 to Ruin. In “The Goal,” he introduces himself as a pensioner who has only a Smile of Resignation with the neighbors in common.
Leonard Cohen’s ironic being torn chant to save “Thanks for the Dance” prior to the Depression. He often recites his verses about Desire, loss and transience with a guards ease the heavy verses how Limericks work. In “The Night of Santiago,” he combines the weightlessness with a coarse image language: “her Breasts were like bread”, whispers Cohen in the description of a mutual seduction. So beautiful and so funny can be Sex, if this Alexis is singing Zorba thereof.
Almost like a confession
In the final lists to the Hummingbird “send” evokes Cohen, the small pleasures of life. He finds solace in the wing buzz of a Hummingbird. To observe this tiny creature, make more sense to listen to as his voice, he whispers to his audience. It sounds like he would make a confession.
Cohen’s humility is not surprising. As a singing Poet of the great charismatics met again and again high literary claims, but as a public figure, Cohen took never to serious. Where tragedies met on ironies, he found again and again a sense of Humor. It is a little sad, if you consider that “Thanks for the Dance” will now be the end to his extensive Canon.
