Frenchman Gaël Monfils won the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Washington on Wednesday against Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4, as did his compatriot Ugo Humbert ahead of Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-6 (8/6 ), 1-6, 6-4. It is the first time this season that Monfils, who has fallen to 323rd in the world and who has benefited from a wild card from the organizers, has managed to win two consecutive matches on the ATP circuit.
In the round of 16, the 36-year-old will face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, 37th in the world, winner of Briton Liam Broady 6-4, 6-2.
For his part, Ugo Humbert, currently 36th in the ATP ranking, will be opposed to the Japanese Yosuke Watanuki, who occupies the best ranking of his career at 99th in the world. The latter surprised the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, 12th player in the world, 7-6 (12/10), 7-6 (7/3).
