Vingegaard, 26, joined the Dutch structure in 2019. He has 20 victories to his name. This season he has won three stages and the overall classification in both the Tour of Galicia (O Gran Camino) and the Tour of the Basque Country. Jumbo-Visma executives have welcomed the contract extension, with general manager Richard Plugge saying the Dane is “a perfect fit” for the team as “he is eager to learn and easy to coach”.
“He was a diamond in the rough when he came to the team. Together, we developed significantly, to finally win the Tour de France,” explained Plugge as the Grande Boucle will once again be the rider’s big goal this summer. The contract extension comes as the team’s major sponsor, supermarket chain Jumbo, questions whether it will continue as main sponsor after 2024, according to Dutch media. The Jumbo-Visma structure finances the activities of cycling teams as well as speed skating, another very popular discipline in the Netherlands.
