And the biggest risk when you are behind the wheel. It claims nearly half of european drivers, and according to the survey of Nokian Tyres, – one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pre-unification – the perception of a higher risk on the roads during the winter is linked precisely to the speed rather than to the bad road conditions, to adverse weather conditions or poor visibility caused by weather conditions or by the fact that in the winter it gets dark much earlier than in the other seasons of the year.
The danger related to speed has been emphasized in particular by the poles and by the germans (respectively 57% and 56% of the respondents). The speed is also the main risk factor for the italians (43%). Motorists French were the only ones to indicate that the slick roads and snowy as the most important risk factor (45%), while only 32% of respondents said that the speed behavior is the most dangerous when you are driving. In the other Countries involved in the survey, the icy roads were cited as the second threat the most important (with the exception of Germany).
The third most relevant risk factor, identified in europeans, was the absence of the safety distance from the vehicle in front. Note that this element of risk has been emphasized mainly by the germans (50% versus 25% and 33% of other Countries).
On average, only 29% of respondents indicated the use of worn tyres as a factor of risk on the road, a figure lower, at the eighth position among the risk factors. At the same time, to the specific question on the possibilities of improving safety in the winter, motorists have indicated more often the use of winter tyres (nearly two out of three; about 80% in Italy). The second best way to increase security, according to respondents, is to control the state of the tread, while the third is to verify the conditions of the brake system of the car.
The survey showed a result somewhat contradictory. On the one hand, the respondents do not consider the use of worn tyres as a major risk factor in the winter. On the other hand, see a potential improvement in road safety thanks to the use of winter tyres specialized, and maintaining a good the state of the tread of the tires.
“the tyres are The only points of contact with the road surface and their condition are fundamental when it comes to traffic safety, how to brake on a snow-covered road or make sudden lane changes on the asphalt, muddy,” says Martin Dražík, Product Manager of Nokian Tyres Europe. “The use of worn tires will extend the braking distance of the car and will make more difficult the handling of the same, especially in conditions of mantle slippery. Also, the tires are not able to deliver autonomously in the snow and mud, and this increases the sense of detachment from the road surface”.
notice that a few motorists feel the need to use snow chains on the winter roads: only 14% of europeans, in fact, has indicated that this enhancement has helped to improve safety. This is due, probably, to the fact that the snow chains are only required on specific uphill, for example in the mountains. This explains in large part because this equipment is important for almost a quarter of the French, and a slightly lower proportion of italians.
