The car is on the bench of the accused, once again accused of excessive emissions of CO2 per kilometer. And the accusation comes from the controller, the European Union, that threatens to impose fines by tilts of millions of euro to the manufacturers if the average of the models does not respect the limits imposed.

Today we must remain within the 95 g/km, but for 2050, the european automotive industry points to a mobility “carbon neutral”, a solution which is in favour of Mike Manley, head of the FCA, and Acea (the association of manufacturers) on condition that will help, however, the Houses in this long journey of thirty years.

“No one can predict today what will be the technology of the future in 30 years (where personally I dream of a park with zero emissions), but the whole world is committed to achieving decarbonisation, to abandon the derivatives of coal and oil as primary energy sources – explains Gaetano Thorel, Director General of the PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroen DS, Opel) – particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen are the frame, in fact, high levels of CO2, a substance climalterante that increases the greenhouse effect: a framework that sees global temperatures climb, ice melts, sea level will rise and real risk of serious environmental consequences, social and economic.”

The industry, meanwhile, today has already started on the path of “purification”: it is almost 900 european companies have invested in total eur 124 billion for breaking down the exhaust emissions, with Italy in third place (with 24,3 billion), after Germany and Spain. More and more present in the range, the strategic models, that reduce the average values of CO2: those who dress to the hybrid, who is the “absolute zero” of the electric 100%.
The more the “bad guys” in this direction are the models of large displacement and power, from sports to off-road. But the makeup of the hybrid is now within the reach of all of the car manufacturers, a way to bring down the average level of emissions in the range of models that each house has in the price list.

Toyota has opened the way for, you know, and dominates the market. The market now besieged by the models of “mild” and the versions PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) the most sophisticated – and expensive – between, the hybrid, where the batteries can also be loaded from a source external power. There are a bit everywhere, even on models of Land Rover or Mitsubishi, while the brands such as Fiat and Suzuki, producing a pattern of displacement compact and less expensive, they turn to the mild hybrid, hybridization light in which the electric motor produces power, but together performs also the functions of generator and starting motor. Lower weights and reduced dimensions.

And the differences are remarkable: a Range Rover can get to issue up to 288 g/km with a 5-liter gasoline, for example, but on the same model as the values go down to 69 grams with the two-thousand-hybridized. In the same way the Outlander of Mitsubishi drops from 169 to 40 g/km with the hybrid, PHEV.

Suzuki, instead, with a range of compact cars, offers all its models with alternative mild hybrid, and the difference of emissions leaps to the eyes. A Vitara thousand gasoline, for example, emits 121 g/km of CO2, which in version 1.400 mild-hybrid down to 104, despite the increased power (from 111 to 129 Hp). A constructor is a generalist as Peugeot (PSA Group together to Citroen DS and Opel) offers in the field offer even more diverse, where the flagship 508 is available plug-in hybrid and petrol with 290 horses, but 32 g/km of CO2, while, in the version only), 1600 petrol available, the Cv’s are 180, but the emissions will not fall below the 144 g/km (109 for the 2000 turbodiesel 177 Hp), but it is gradually shifting the balance towards hybrid and electric on all ranges of the Group.
The alternatives are all electric there are however already now: the Nissan is a champion with the Leaf, Renault tip his cards on the Zoe, but the electric 100% peeps, the all the lists now, last but not least the 500 Fiat or Honda Jazz. Here the emissions are theoretically to zero, while not forgetting, however, that the tyres, brakes and wear and tear of the roads and emit almost as many particles as diesel.

But why the accusing finger remains focused only on the cars? Heating, industrial fumes, planes and ships are out of this process, yet the 40 cargo ships in the world pollute as much as all 760 million cars in the planet…
