Manchester United defender Harry Maguire himself announced on Sunday that he would no longer be captain next season, by decision of his coach Erik ten Hag. “After a discussion with the manager today (Sunday) he informed me that he will be changing captains,” Maguire wrote on Twitter.

The English press had already hinted that the Dutch coach wanted to remove the armband from Maguire, whom he had started only eight times in the Premier League last season. “He explained his reasons to me in detail, and although I am extremely disappointed on a personal level, I will continue to give my all every time I wear this jersey,” added the 30-year-old England international, who wished “everything possible success” to his successor, whoever he may be.

Last season, it was Bruno Fernandes who most often acted as interim captain when Maguire was not playing.
