Many thousands more are still trying to escape. Many people have walked miles to reach the nearest border only to find long lines.
According to the United Nations refugee agency, as many as 4,000,000 people could be affected by the fighting.
Chris Livesay, CBS News correspondent, reports that Poland, which is located on Ukraine’s western border has allowed more than 200 000 Ukrainians in.
Livesay stated that a queue at the border crossing in Krakovets, Ukraine clearly demonstrated the devastation faced by people fleeing bloodshed at home. After waiting for days, dozens of people waited in line Monday morning to receive food.
One refugee said, “We knew it would be like war, but we didn’t know it would actually be, on our entire Ukraine, war.”
Their homes are being destroyed by the Russian invasion. According to the U.N., more than 360,000 Ukrainians have fled across Ukraine’s borders due to the Russian invasion. This number “continues rising” and most of them are fleeing to Poland.
CBS News witnessed a queue at the Krakovets crossing on the Ukrainian side. There were cars, buses, and trucks lining up for miles to enter the country. These vehicles transport children, pets, as well as anything their weary, desperate passengers might need in a hurry.
Livesay and his crew saw a lot of children and women waiting to cross the border into Poland Monday. As the country seeks volunteers to defend its territory during the conflict between Vladimir Putin (the West) and Ukraine, men of fighting age were ordered to stay in Ukraine.
Polish border guards noted that 22,000 people had crossed in the opposite direction to Poland on Sunday. Many of these were Ukrainians who had traveled abroad and returned to fight for their homeland.
