As a response to the needs and concerns of the most vulnerable in the town, the ‘Walking Together Association of Armilla’ was established in 2011. It was established in 2015 by the cooperation of its first partners. This coincided with the busiest stage in the activities.
Volunteers who take part in the activities of this association provide high-quality care for those who are dependent and have special needs. They provide home visits to people in need of support, help, and warmth. In society.
They also make home visits to elderly people, and do other activities to help them integrate into society. Every week, the Hogar del Mayor de Armilla hosts birthdays, workshops, and meetings. The majority of the tasks were performed by three of its volunteers, Carolina Gonzalez and Tere Casares, along with Pilar Marinosa and a few other volunteers. They assure, however, that they will continue to need more assistance. Carolina says, “We are not many and a helping hand is always needed.” “However, being with them always enriches your life, you can see how much they have and you see their gratitude when we go with them on outings or accompany them.” Tere says, “It’s very rewarding to be with them and to see their enjoyment of the outdoors.”
A smile from the heart
There have been dolls, plasticine games, and ornaments for the community made. We try to provide an outlet for all that we do. We sell handicrafts made by the older people to help maintain the association. Cristina says that the most difficult part is the visits. This requires a lot time from volunteers. The association does not always require volunteers who will be 100% involved in the project. They prefer someone who will at least keep the elders company for a few hours.
It is difficult to fully understand volunteering. Cristina, Tere, and Ma Carmen believe that volunteering requires you to always look out for others. This must be done from your home. Teaching young people how to be a good person doesn’t make them want to help those most in need. They must also see their grandparents, parents and other relatives doing acts of solidarity to become great citizens. Cristina says that it is the feeling of being able to simply see how someone dependent thanks you with her eyes that makes you feel happy. This is the best part about these activities.
