Atlanta-based Delta announced Friday that it had stopped the codesharing system, which allows Delta and Aeroflot customers book flights on both airlines.
Aeroflot has removed its code from Aeroflot services beyond Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, and Aeroflot’s code was removed from Delta-operated flights from Los Angeles and New York. Delta stated that accommodations will be provided for customers who are affected by the changes. It also said it doesn’t operate flights to Russia or Ukraine.
After Aeroflot was banned from flying into Britain on Thursday, the codesharing suspension was put in place.
Aeroflot did not respond to Saturday’s email seeking comment from its communications department.
The Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania announced on Saturday that they would close their airspace for Russian airlines. The invasion of Ukraine also prompted Slovenia and the Czech Republic to do so.
Kaja Kallas, Estonia’s Prime Minister, tweeted that Russia should be isolated economically and politically by the West. He said “there is no place in democratic skies for planes of aggressor states.”
The government of Slovenia stated that the ban applies to all Russian-registered aircraft and Russian-licensed operators.
Martin Kupka, Czech Transport Minister, stated that the Czech Republic has taken “increased measures against Russian aggression in Ukraine” with the decision.
