LE FIGARO. – What will be the conditions for the reception of holidaymakers in Montenegro, in the next few weeks ?
Željka Radak Kukavičić. – Of tourists in Montenegro will be able to deliver exactly the same activities as the previous years. The hotels, the restaurants, the beaches and the clubs are all open since the 15th of may, and the hiking or cycling, excursions and all other activities to the destination of the tourists are again accessible. However, we have established a set of rules to ensure visitors of the conditions of maximum safety, particularly on the coast. The public beaches will have to meet a distance of 11 metres between two pairs of sun-beds and will be equipped with products for hygiene and disinfection. The directorate of maritime Affairs will also conduct every 10 days additional monitoring of water quality at 100 sites in the montenegrin coastal zone.

The Organization of national coordination for infectious diseases has given its green light for the opening of marinas and ports, our tourism infrastructure is totally ready to welcome visitors. Since the 1st of June, Montenegro has opened its borders without quarantine or testing, for european countries and extra-european with less than 25 cases of infection per 100,000 inhabitants. We now hope that the global health situation will quickly improve and that the tourist season can be raging, without leaving anyone aside.
This restriction does not allow the French to visit the country. Is it likely to evolve ?
Among the 2.6 million tourists who visited Montenegro in 2019, which is 3.6 per cent, are of French, or about 90,000 people and 440.000 nights. It is a market that we want to see grow up, but unfortunately, the hex is always above the number of cases set by the authorities for a given number of inhabitants. We are very proud to say that our country was the last country in Europe to have had a case of Covid-19, and the first to defeat him. Since the beginning of the pandemic, only 324 people were infected and 9 died.
The limit of 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is not a desire to be limited to the visitors of the neighbouring countries, or a way to attract attention. We need the tourism, it represents one-fifth of our GDP and our jobs. But our main goal is to protect the country against infections and ensure the safety of those who will spend their summer with us. Soon, hopefully, the French will be able to enter freely. Like the travelers in our key markets such as the United Kingdom and Russia, hard hit by the pandemic. Our exemplary health is a major asset for attracting holidaymakers who might not have thought of our destination in the first place. Feeling protected is crucial in the current context. Our 293 km of coastline on the Adriatic sea has nothing to envy to those of our neighbours. The Great beach of Ulcinj is famous among lovers of kite surfing, the peninsula of Luštica is the paradise of the divers, while the beach of the island of St. Nicholas has been ranked among the top 10 of Europe’s most beautiful by Forbes magazine. Not to forget our rich heritage whose emblem is the medieval city of Kotor, a real open air museum which is full of palaces and small towns.
