A surgical mask transparent “to keep smiling”. The crisis of the Covid-19 has put the masks feature, but it has already been two years, a team of swiss researchers is working on the development of a mask of a new kind. The HelloMask will be transparent, and biodegradable. The project has been carried out by teams of EssentialTech at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in collaboration with the Empa (research Center on the materials of the Confederation) to give naissanceà a start-up, HMCARE. It has just raised 1 million swiss francs (935.000 euros). “The funding could have been much more important, but we didn’t need more, for the moment,” explains Thierry Pelet (photo), the future CEO of the start-up.
HMCARE working on the development of a real surgical mask transparent, and not, as is sometimes the case, a hybrid solution, with an opaque mask with a transparent part. To achieve this, the researchers develop a new material that contains “99% derived from biomass”. Filaments of polymers and obtenussont stretched by a technique of electrospinning, a relatively common. These new masks had to be produced in Asia but, considering the new demand for this type of equipment, production could be done in Switzerland. Initially, these masks were to be used for personal medical, but they could also be sold to the public by 2021.
