It was officially inaugurated in these days, the new assembly line of batteries at the plant of Volvo in Ghent, Belgium, where towards the end of the year will start production of its first car with all-wheel drive solely on electric power, the XC40 Recharge P8.

The Swedish company intends to reduce by 40% the carbon footprint for each vehicle produced between 2018 and 2025, as a first concrete step towards the goal of becoming a company with zero impact on the climate by 2040.

In the next five years, Volvo will present every year a model of the traction electric-only, and thus bring the share of cars only electric to 50% of global sales by 2025, with the remaining 50% is represented by hybrid models. ‘Recharge’ will be the name that is shared by all the new Volvo models rechargeable transmission-equipped electric-only or plug-in hybrid.

“I Am pleased to celebrate this important occasion with the people who work in the plant of Ghent,” says Geert Bruyneel, responsible of the production activities at a global level. “Ghent is the first factory of the Group to install an assembly line of batteries and therefore plays the role of open-track of the numerous initiatives that we plan to prepare our production network to electrification.”

In the next few years, with the advance of the program of electrification of the entire range of products, the assembly of the batteries will become an important part of the activities of global production of Volvo Cars. The plant in Ghent will have important experiences to be transferred to other production sites in terms of optimization of processes and efficiency.

At the beginning of this year, the House announced the intention to set up an assembly line of batteries at its us plant located just outside Charleston, South Carolina. The beginning of the installation is planned for this autumn.

Not only. Volvo has plans to build battery electric vehicles at the plant in Luqiao, China, which is under the operational management of the Home and where the Volvo models based on the platform of the CMA are assembled next to models made on the construction criteria and similar by the affiliated brands Polestar, and LYNK & CO.

last year, Volvo Cars has signed supply agreements for long-term with two of the world’s largest manufacturers of batteries, CATL, with headquarters in China and the south Korean company LG Chem. The agreements cover the supply for the next decade of the batteries for the models Volvo and Polestar, the next generation, including the XC40 Recharge P8.
