Autonomy, charging time and infrastructure, are the hot topics affecting the sector of electric vehicles. Arguments are heard by potential customers of this type of vehicles with which they must make the accounts with the manufacturers already struggling with the attempt of reduction of costs of purchase are considered still too high.

So to search for “new blood” to convey to future mobility electrified, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a “challenge” for students of the Politecnico di Torino, which, after the initial stages, just ended at the Officine Abarth.

With this initiative, the Fca has asked the young students to propose innovative solutions to optimize the system of charging the batteries of electric cars, trying to combine the need to increase the power with the need to maintain its durability for as long as possible.

The thirty children participants, of different nationalities and different courses of study (mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical, electronics, automotive and management…), they have been divided into five multi-disciplinary teams and have had three months of time to develop their projects.

In particular, the boys have focused their attention on the development of an integrated system to identify the percentage of optimal recharging of the battery on the basis of a daily commute, the cost of charging, of the power required and the evaluation of its impact on the useful life of the battery.

A daunting task (for the first time inserted in the courses offered by the university of turin), which was carried out in collaboration with the “Contamination Lab, Innovation Kitchen”, a space of the politecnico, where students can experience and put into practice the knowledge acquired in an informal environment, encouraging the creative spirit of the boys, who in this way can touch with hand the technological challenges related to the dynamics of industrial concrete.

At the end of the path, among the five works proposed, the jury composed of experts and technicians of the Fca has chosen the project team InFusion that has identified an innovative solution to reduce at the maximum the effects of the’anxiety by charging the users of electric cars.
The jury wanted to reward the ability to cope in the team, the complexity of the problem, the uniqueness of the project as submitted and the quality of the presentation.

“It was an initiative that has met with an evident appreciation on the part of the students – emphasize to the headquarters – Fca strongly supports these new forms of teaching that allow children to work on important and current topics such as sustainable mobility, abituandoli to find practical solutions to the problems that you will face when entering the world of work”.

the Fca, through its division e-Mobility, is actively engaged in the search for solutions to promote the diffusion of the electric car, also through the creation of an ecosystem that are able to meet all the needs of its customers and is environmentally sustainable and economic. (m.r.)
