At the start of the school year, the president announced that he wanted to offer the lowest-income households the opportunity to switch to electric cars by offering rental at 100 euros per month with, at the end of the day, a purchase option. A “social leasing” measure, confirmed by the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, which should be implemented by 2024. However, the contours of the measure remain quite vague for the moment. During the national ecological planning council, the president made an appointment in November to find out the details of the application of this campaign promise.
In the 2024 finance bill currently being debated in the Assembly, a measure plans to replace the current annual tax on the age of vehicles (which is a low-yield tax) which is based on obsolete categories of vehicles , by a tax on emissions of atmospheric pollutants. Three rates are retained for this new tax: a rate of €100 for “category 1” vehicles, a rate of €500 for other gasoline vehicles and a rate of 0 euros for electric or hydrogen vehicles.
Still within the framework of the 2024 Budget, an amendment supported by the majority deputies is viewed favorably by the government and has a good chance of being included in the text which will ultimately be adopted. This measure would aim to strengthen the tax credit supporting the installation of home charging stations for individuals, for a maximum amount of up to 500 euros.

Since this Tuesday, the new ecological bonus formula for vehicle purchases applies to individuals. This purchasing assistance favors vehicles with a low carbon footprint and therefore particularly: electric cars. “The ecological bonus applies to passenger cars running exclusively on electricity, hydrogen or a combination of the two, and having a mass of less than 2.4 tonnes,” we can read on the website of the Ministry of economy. In total, the amount of this aid can increase up to 5,000 euros for the acquisition of a car and 6,000 euros for a van.
These aid amounts are increased by 2,000 euros for the lowest-income households and apply to vehicles whose purchase price is less than 47,000 euros. Since October 10, a new eligibility criterion has applied for new electric cars, in particular to exclude vehicles manufactured outside Europe. To be eligible for this aid, the vehicle must also meet a minimum environmental score which takes into account the CO2 emissions generated by transporting the vehicle from the factory to the buyer.
