Beveren The well-known donutketen Donuttello with its registered office in Warande Shopping in Beveren closed. The Waasland, however, will not be long in his hunger to continue, because next month will open a pop-up branch in the Waasland Shopping Center in Sint-Niklaas. “We want to concentrate more on the larger cities. The sales market in a municipality Beveren was a little too small,” says manager Maxim Daems.

Donuttello is the brainchild of stand-up comedian Kamal Kharmach. Last year he opened together with the Beverse, Megan De Greef, a branch in Warande Shopping in Beveren. A long life, the matter was not, however, be short-lived because after a year, the doors are already closed. Marijke De Greef got there in August last year, after a new job was offered. Now the lease has ended in the Front and has Donuttello decided not to have continued to knit.

Kamal Kharmach has his chain, meanwhile, sold and wants the money to reinvest in some of the new companies, of which two are again to do with food. At the same time, he and other entrepreneurs to help those in trouble, for the new VRT programme ‘The Matter’. In addition to comedy, he teaches also business administration at KDG-Hogeschool.

Market is too small

Maxim Daems is the new owner of Donuttello and wants to be the chain a slightly different direction sending out. “Hence our decision to use the site in Beveren not continue to operate,” he explains. “This branch was started with a self-franchisee, but there was so already left. Beveren was a good location for a pop-up subsidiary, but actually not for a permanent establishment. Therefore, the market there is something to small. Then you need in addition to donuts and also all other things to start such as cupcakes and cakes to make it cost-effective to keep and we want to do with Donuttello really of donuts is the main focus.”

According to Daems, the concept of the supply chain is not to appeal today. “Flanders is still fond of donuts, but the public want nowadays like variety. Therefore, we only in the big cities like Antwerp and Mechelen with a permanent establishment want. In Antwerp, we sit in the Grand Bazaar and in march will open a new branch in the Central train Station. In the future, however, we want to start working more with pop-ups. With ‘Donuttello on Tour’ we want to be in a lot of places for a short time popping up. The Waasland will in fact not be so long without our donuts. The kiosk in the shopping center of Ghent-South go we move to the Waasland Shopping Center in Sint-Niklaas. We have entered into a contract for a half year and will then see how well it catches on. At the spring mid-term break, we would like the doors are open.”
