Armed group takes over oil fields in Libya

An armed militia has taken over the oil field Sharara in Libya, which is one of the largest in the country, according to the state oil company National Oil Corporation (NOC) has declared force majeure by reason of the event.

In a video published on the net claim people from the south of Libya that they are blocking the oil field in protest against the marginalisation, and to protest against the lack of electricity, petrol and money.

the Sharara field, producing almost a third of the country’s total production of one million barrels daily. It is administered through a collaboration between the Spanish Repsol, French Total, austrian OMV and the Norwegian Statoil.

the security situation in Libya is very weak. The country has not had a functioning and recognised government since dictator Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed in a Nato-backed uprising in 2011.

Two rival states, rival militias, clans, and the jihadists have battled for control of the territory and the country’s vast oil wealth.
