Mastercard has in breach of EU competition rules kept the costs for card payments artificially high, and it now costs the company a milliardbøde.

the Fine from the EU to the us business is on the 570 million euros. This corresponds to 4.3 billion Danish kroner.

Competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager writes in a message to the Mastercard rules have cost extra for consumers and the stores.

– to prevent butiksindehaverne in to choose the best conditions offered by banks in other EU member states, Mastercard has artificially raised the cost of card payments to the detriment of consumers and stores, said Vestager.

the Fine comes after that in the beginning of January there was a big debate about Jyske Bank’s future initiative, where the bank will split the Visadankortet up in two, so that customers get a Visa card and a credit card.

Several critics accused in this connection, the bank that the initiative was a direct attack on the dankortet and the bank speculated that, with dankortet out of the picture and make more money on fees, when they issued cards from Visa and Mastercard.
