“Silver in sportswear begins to be phased out”

“Three companies that sell sportswear in Sweden have begun the phasing out of garment which contains silver, and a further two plan to do it.”

“the Clothes with the silver is advertised as odorless, but when the clothes are washed ports silver in nature and becomes an environmental toxin.”

“– that we should be able to clear our waterways and the environment we need in the long term, halve the silvermängden who come to our Swedish sewage treatment plants. At the same time, we know that the largest known source is silverbehandlade clothes, ” says Anders Finnson, environmental expert at the trade association the Swedish water.”

“After having done a survey among the 13 large sports chains, he gives only five pass. Haglöfs have phased out all the clothes with added silver. Fitnessbutiken and the Stadium has begun phasing out, while Addnature and Peak Performance has started the planning for the phase-out.”

“Among those who fail, the majority will be invited to reply in Swedish waters survey. Adidas said that it will continue to sell clothing with silver.”

“the Company writes in a mejlkommentar TT that Adidas uses silver in some products because of its antibacterial properties, and that this is allowed under EU biocidförordning.”

“– We can’t wait on the law. Just as we have done with PFAS and triclosan as we run on through to get the stores to phase out the dangerous substances, says Anders Finnson.”

“the Problem with silver is that it does not remain in the clothes – after ten washes has a 70% washed away from the clothes, according to the Swedish water’s test results.”

“Swedish water washing of such clothing is therefore drastically: Wash the clothes by hand, collect the water in jerry cans and take them to the återvinningsstationens department for hazardous waste.”

“Option, to the silver, supplied with the waste water, means that a part of it, ultimately, ends up on the sea and lake bottoms, for plants can not capture all the silver.”

“more Toxic than mercury.”

“With an increasing amount of silver in the sediments, where the larvae, eggs, bacteria, crustaceans and borstmaskar can take damage – benthic animals that are food to the fish.”

“– its silver content increases gradually in the sediments. In an environment with a lot of organic material begins, the ions wander and silverjonen in itself is more toxic than kvicksilverjonen to aquatic organisms, ” says Anders Finnson.”

“He is convinced that the legislative process will eventually catch up, so to silvertillsatser in clothing are prohibited. The EU has a biocidförordning, which means that potential environmental contaminants shall riskbedömas before they can be banned.”

“– There are 16-17 different silver compounds used in consumer products. There are cutting boards, there are clothes – we have even found baby clothing with silver. Why not your baby should get the smell?”

“These silver compounds is worked through and subjected to risk analysis, one by one.”

“– Now rolls the machinery, but it rolls slowly, and we wanted to take hold of this issue before the legislation can there, for we do not know really, if there are five or ten years.”

“the Swedish water are also pushing for the labelling to be made clearer for consumers to be able to make an informed choice. Earlier in the fall was notified several companies to the Swedish chemicals agency for a lack of labelling.”

“Silver is classified as a biocide, that is to say, an environmental toxin.”

“It is used among other things in workout clothes because of the bactericidal properties.”

“At the washing of clothes is silverbehandlade delicious silver in the sewage system. The leak is between 31 and 90 per cent in ten washes.”

“Plants can only capture about 90 percent of the silver, and the rest go out in nature.”

“Silverföreningarna accumulating on lake and sea beds. If they react with other substances released silver ions, which are toxic to benthic organisms.”

“think, Therefore, the Swedish water that such clothing should be hand washed and the washing water should be managed as hazardous waste.”

“the Swedish water association 300 water and wastewater enterprises and municipalities, which distributes drinking water and treats wastewater.”
