Lens On Ghent: Discover Ghent’s History with AR App
A new app called Lens On Ghent has been launched in the city of Ghent, Belgium. This app, developed by VisitGent and Proximus, allows visitors and residents to explore the rich history of the city in a unique way using augmented reality (AR). Through this app, users can experience the medieval character of three iconic locations in Ghent.
The app aims to bring to life the historical significance of these locations, such as the 800-year-old concert hall at the Bijlokesite, the majestic palace behind the archway of the Prinsenhof, and the bustling trade ships along the Gras-en Korenlei. By using modern technology, the city of Ghent and Proximus have collaborated to make this cultural heritage visible through AR.
Lens On Ghent is not only designed for visitors but also for residents to rediscover their city and immerse themselves in Ghent’s rich history through AR technology. The app offers a unique and interactive AR experience at each of these iconic locations, providing users with a deeper understanding of how these places looked in the past.
The practical functioning of the Lens On Ghent app is simple. When users are in close proximity to one of the landmarks mentioned above, they will receive a notification to open the AR experience on their smartphones. For example, at the Bijlokesite, users can virtually explore the ancient concert hall, once a hospital that treated patients for centuries. Similarly, at the Prinsenhof, users can see the grand Hof ten Walle, a walled palace inhabited by nobles and rich merchants. Along the Gras-en Korenlei, users can witness the busy port activity that made Ghent a vital center of trade in the past.
These monuments are conveniently located along the city walk of VisitGent, encouraging visitors to not only explore the city center but also other areas like the Kunstenkwartier, Prinsenhof, and Portus Ganda. By offering a glimpse into Ghent’s history at these key locations, the app enhances the overall experience of discovering the city.
Lens On Ghent will be available for free download in the Google Play Store and the App Store in the coming days. So, whether you are a tourist or a local resident, be sure to check out this innovative app to immerse yourself in the fascinating history of Ghent.
