Thai driver Alexander Albon has extended his contract “for several years” with Williams, where he has been playing since 2022, the British Formula 1 team announced on Wednesday.

“I am very excited to stay at Williams and continue working with such a talented and dedicated team. The start of the season was difficult but we have made significant progress since my arrival. It’s a long-term project that I firmly believe in and I want to play an important role in it,” explained the 28-year-old pilot.

The London native will compete in his 50th Grand Prix with Williams this weekend at Imola. He has managed to finish ten times in the Top 10 with his best result being two seventh places in 2023, in Canada and at Monza.

“We are delighted to keep Alex for the long term. He is very talented, dedicated and his technical contribution is valuable on the path we follow to regain competitiveness. Since joining Williams, he has shown his ability to perform under pressure and his extension is important in our project to return to the top of the grid,” underlined James Vowles, the team boss.

Albon, who has competed in 87 Grands Prix since his debut in 2019 with Toro Rosso, has achieved one podium in his career, finishing third in the Tuscan GP held at the Mugello circuit at the wheel of a Red Bull single-seater.

During this 2020 season, shortened due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Thai finished seventh in the championship, his best result.

This year, Albon and Williams have yet to score a single point. The Thai finished 11th twice, close to the points, in Saudi Arabia and Australia.
