Around three weeks after the body parts were found in a Hamburg sewer, investigators say they have clarified the case and caught a suspect. As the police in the Hanseatic city announced on Thursday evening, it is the remains of a woman who has been missing for ten years. A 43-year-old, who had previously been classified as a suspect, was taken into custody.

According to the police, investigators had already assumed a crime after the disappearance of the woman from Bulgaria in 2013, the suspect was considered the alleged perpetrator and was in custody in the meantime. However, the suspicion could not be maintained.

Due to the new developments, there is now renewed urgent suspicion. The man was arrested on Thursday when he entered Hamburg Airport from abroad and was taken into custody.

The remains of the woman, who was 29 at the time of her disappearance, were found by an angler in a canal in the Wilhelmsburg district in mid-January, where they had clearly been lying for a long time. The victim lived in the district in the south of Hamburg at the time.

The police did not provide any details or background to the crime. The investigation was ongoing, it was only said.
