For a week, the anger has not subsided in Iran. The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, after her arrest in Tehran on September 13 for a headscarf deemed “badly worn” by the morality police, sparked a wave of riots across the country. On social networks, many women film themselves cutting their hair or burning their headscarf, compulsory since the Iranian revolution of 1979.
An uprising for women, against the headscarf, and with anti-religious overtones: wouldn’t the Iranian people actually be much less conservative than their leaders? Hamdam Mostafavi, deputy editor of L’Express and Iran specialist, sheds some light on the matter.
