A violent collisions of trains was the cause of the fire, said egyptian security officials to the AFP. An eyewitness says, however, to Reuters, that it was a train that drove into a barrier on the Ramses railway station in the central part of Cairo.
I stood on the platform and saw the train running into the barrier with great speed, says øjenvidnet, Mina Ghaly, to Reuters.
All began to run, but many were slain, when the locomotive exploded. I saw at least nine burned corpses lie on the ground, says øjenvidnet.
