The statue of the controversial Polish priest of the trade union Solidarnosc, that earlier this week toppled by activists, with the support of the trade union back to its place in the Polish city of Gdansk. The 2010 death Jankowski is accused of sexual abuse of minors, but was never convicted.
The statue was in the night between Wednesday and Thursday toppled, a few hours before the start of the summit on sexual abuse in the Church in the Vatican. The image was clothed with the robe of an acolyte and kinderondergoed, as a protest against sexual abuse and associated doofpotoperaties in the catholic church.
“The employees of the shipyards and of Solidarity have the image at 7 o’clock in the morning, again put in his place”, told Solidarity-vice-chairman Karol Guzikiewicz. “It is a statue of the ex-chaplain of the union. It was violated without prior judicial decision. As long as these things are not proven in court, the monument would remain in place”, stressed Guzikiewicz.
Jankowski is a figurehead of the Solidarity movement and the resistance against the communist regime in Poland. The first accusations of pedophilia, date back to 2004. There was then an investigation is opened and closed. After his death there were allegations popping up. As published the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza at the end of last year an article with new testimonials about the pedophilic actions of the pastor. According to Guzikiewicz challenged the sisters of Jankowski, the liberal oppositiekrant to do this for the right.
The public prosecutor’s office in Gdansk yesterday, three activists of the statue omverwierpen formally accused of the “violation and damage” of the image. They risk a sentence of five years.
