the EU and The League of Arab states (LAS) has, with the adoption of a joint statement cast a foundation for closer cooperation with promising prospects, believes the prime minister and the EU president.

It has happened on a summit, the first – but not the last – of its kind, on Sunday and Monday in the egyptian Sharm el-Sheikh.

– I really do believe that this can be the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation between the us, says EU president Donald Tusk after the meeting.

Several EU-countries would have the certainty that the president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, who is accused of mass killings, and Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohamed bin Salman, not sat with around the table.

Both the EU and the LAS stands on the sidelines in relation to the conflict in Syria, as the league has suspended Syria in 2011 after the war in the country. Now want both to get on the track again.

In relation to the conflict between israelis and palestinians, the parties have a common starting point, as they are agreed on a two-state solution. It noted the egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, with satisfaction at the meeting.

– In itself is very positive, we just got the first summit between The Arab League and the EU, we need to strengthen our cooperation, says prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

He sees a potential in the arab countries – also for the Danish economy.
