Aalst They can change to a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and feel totally top in Aalst; of course we’re talking about the peregrine falcons. This year, there are two youngsters born on the silo of Tereos. Over the past ten years were 40 new peregrine falcons born at the St. joseph’s church, and Tereos.
“breed There this year for the tenth time peregrine falcons in the city centre of Aalst”, says Rik De Baere of Natuurpunt. “2017 was the record year with 4 young on Tereos and St. joseph’s church. With the two older birds there and lived there that summer, so less than twelve peregrine falcons in Aalst centrum. In total, ‘produced’ Aalst all 40 falcons in ten years time.”
This year there are two young valks. “Natuurpunt could last week, together with a recognised vogelringer back the peregrine falcon rings on the high silo with Tereos in Aalst centrum. They were next to a aluminiumring with a code number, also a black – and- yellow colour ring around the leg. The male goes as X1 through life, the female flies around as X3. Within a few weeks of flying the young falcons and the striking ring is with a good set of binoculars from a distance to read.”
Extinct
Twenty years ago, the peregrine falcon completely extinct in our region. “It is a remarkable return of a species which twenty years ago was completely extinct in our country. The peregrine falcon has rapidly adapted to the improved situation: less use of toxic pesticides and safe nesting and sufficient food (feral pigeons) in urban environments. They live mainly of other birds, which they seize in dives of up to 300 km per hour. The magnificent peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world.”
On Saturday 1 June, together with Natuurpunt ‘Lures nor the rpm’s between 10 and 12 hours from the Esplanadeplein in Aalst. With strong telescopes to the peregrine falcons are considered.
