“Few schools have signed up to the EU-skolvalet”

“There are far fewer schools who sign up to the EU-skolvalet than to the Swedish skolvalet. There are several reasons for this according to Åsa Fahlén, chair of the Teachers ‘ association.”

“Teachers have to get the conditions for school choice in may when there is already so much to do,” she says.”

“the Attractiveness of Europe and the EU is increasing among Swedish adolescents, according to the Authority for youth and civilsamhällesfrågor, MUCF. The same authority points to a lack of knowledge about the EU issues, both with local elected officials and of the teachers.”

“– It is the politicians out in the municipalities that set the frame. If they do not think that the EU is an important issue, then perhaps not even the teachers will be given the necessary conditions, says Åsa Fahlén, chair of the Teachers ‘ association.”

“the EUROPEAN elections coincide with the busiest month, during may, among other things, several national tests. If the teachers should organise school choice in addition to the already heavy workload, then it can be tough to get it together according to Åsa Fahlén.”

“There are more schools that participate in the EU-skolvalet this year than in 2014, but a majority of the country’s secondary schools have not registered.”

“– There is a demand for subject-specific training, especially in certain areas. Samhällslärare have a good grasp of the Swedish polity, however, the knowledge about the EU is perhaps not as deep. Resources are needed for training.”

“– the EU is a hugely important issue, and many teachers would like to have more time overall to engage in democracy, says Åsa Fahlén from the Teachers ‘ association.”

“the Agency for youth and civilsamhällesfrågor has done a survey which shows that 60 per cent of Sweden’s youth are interested in social issues. Even more, 65 percent, are interested in what’s happening in other countries according to the same authority.”

“In the 2014 elections to the european Parliament were 273 schools in Sweden notified to the school choice, in this year’s EUROPEAN elections is so far the 333 schools notified. This is an increase of almost 17% since 2014. However, a majority of the country’s secondary schools have not registered.”

“In the parliamentary elections in 2018 was a total of 1 718 schools notified and the final result was a turnout of 79.8%. Schools from 271 municipalities participated.”

“school choice is a simulated election that is organized by students or students and school personnel together in the schools. School choice is aimed at grade 7-9 and upper secondary school, including special education.”
