On Saturday, a man, aged in his 50s, was found dead in the resort of Agia Pelagia after becoming trapped in his car when torrential rains began to fall.

His 49-year-old passenger who had been wanted since Saturday was finally found dead in the sea on Sunday, firefighters said.

These two people were traveling to Heraklion to work, according to the public television channel ERT.

From Saturday 10:30 am local (07:30 GMT), a deluge of rain fell on the north-east of Crete, in particular on the region of Heraklion.

Firefighters and rescuers remained mobilized on Sunday to help the distraught residents in the face of these exceptional floods.

Civil protection, placed on alert, asked the population to be vigilant for the day on Sunday in Crete and in the surrounding islands, Rhodes, Karpathos, Kastellorizo ​​and Kassos.

The Deputy Minister of the Interior was to go there on Sunday to establish the extent of the damage.

More than 15 shops, mostly luxury restaurants, were damaged, in Agia Pelagia which usually caters to wealthy customers, according to ERT.

Local media report extensive damage in other seaside villages where the streets have become veritable rivers carrying away everything in their path and where several homes have had to be evacuated.
