Ghent, member of European parliament Guy Verhofstadt will on Thursday take the oath as a municipal councillor for Open Vld Gent. It is remarkable that for sure, it is all of 2009 ago that he still was. In 2007, he missed even one appointment with the Russian Vladimir Putin because he is in Ghent had to be for the city council.
Thursday night to lay the first mayor Mathias De Clercq, and then also all of the 52 other councillors and aldermen take an oath in the Ghent gemeenteraadszaal. And it will, therefore, also Guy Verhofstadt, the former prime minister, member of the European Parliament and according to some ‘political genius’. That someone who has such high political summits shaves will sit on the municipal level, is at least remarkable.
He did it often, are in the Gent. Of course, in his early days, from 1976 to 1982, but in 2007 he became a council member. That was in the appointment with Freya Van den Bossche (sp.(a), who also participated. They stopped in 2003 when ships are in Ghent because they when minister of the environment. Verhofstadt and Van den Bossche had in 2006 to campaign for ‘purple’ in Ghent, with a photo on a bench in the citadel park in Ghent. The passage of Verhofstadt between 2006 and 2009 broke very few pots. On committees, he took no part, and during the council, he read books. There was, here and there criticism. The last few months that he is councillor, he was mostly absent, since a prominent role within Europe not to combine fell with the Ghent city council. The most striking fact is in that period that he was in 2007 an agreement with the Russian Vladimit Putin missed because he had to be on the Ghent city council.
In each case, the following Thursday, he explained again the oath. That confirms Mathias De Clercq. When it became known that Guy Verhofstadt again the liberal list would be pushing for the elections, he had also indicated that his mandate effectively would record. Also in 2012, he was as lijstduwer elected, but when was he not. This time, he supported his advance that he does have sense in it, in that council, and especially to Mathias De Clercq to support. But as he said also, “I live in Ghent and have so, what about that city to tell, at least, as the Inhabitants of ghent want to.” And who wanted that. We ended up on the 5th place at Open Vld, with 2.267 votes, or 265 more than the new blue ships Sami Souguir.
Verhofstadt is 65 in april and will probably still be one time to participate in the European elections in may. If he then continues to sit in the Ghent council remains to be seen.
