In an interview with Steven Bartlett published on YouTube this Monday morning, the youth coach declared having gone through a long depression. “Throughout my career, I have been depressed. To understand this, you have to go back to when I was young! Growing up, I didn’t have any affection… when my dad held me, the first thing he said was, “this baby is going to be an amazing soccer player.” He shaped me, he was tough. At 13, I played and won a match 6-0. I scored all 6 goals but… it was always what I didn’t do that counted. I always had the fear and the feeling of pleasing others with my football, my money until the day my girlfriend and my children all started crying for the person I am. And then you feel human. »
Generally speaking, Henry is never taboo regarding mental health topics in sport, and has often spoken about his relationship with his father in previous speaking engagements. However, this is the first time that he has dared to speak of “career-long depression”, throughout a career as a champion, the underside of which is therefore brought to light by the person mainly concerned.
