Mexico wants the Spanish king and the pope apologise for the crimes committed against the indigenous peoples during the conquest and the subjugation of Mexico in the 16th century. That the Mexican president is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a letter asked.

In a message via social media was disseminated, described Lopez Obrador of the conquest as an invasion. With the letters to king Felipe VI and pope Francis, he asks that the crimes be recognized and that there are excuses to be offered to the indigenous peoples.

Furthermore, the president said hoped that 2021 is a year of “historic reconciliation” would be. In that year, Mexico three anniversaries: 500 years ago (1521) fell namely the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, which in 1321 was founded, in Spanish hands, and in 1821 was Mexico independent.

First, apologies, atonement

It is time for a reconciliation with the past, said Lopez Obrador, “but first, we ask for apologies”. In exchange, he promised himself also apologize for the crimes in respect of the indigenous peoples in Mexico, who after independence were committed.

The Spanish government has in response, all resolutely refused to on the question of the Mexican president. Madrid argued that the deeds of the Spaniards five hundred years ago, not in today’s terms could be judged.

The Vatican has not yet on the request responded to, but the pope made a visit to Mexico in 2016, however, all that the indigenous people “centuries of discrimination” had to undergo.
