Leuven The 26-year-old Nele Symons from Leuven is the strong woman behind ‘Makeup Heartist’. As a personal coach she teaches the visually impaired, techniques to make up to make themselves. Notable: on her 19th was Nele itself confronted with a genetic eye disease. “My enemy is, little by little, my partner and my individuality. From my personal experience I want to blind and visually impaired people the chance to re-radiate.”
How do you put makeup when you are visually impaired or blind? Not obvious, not to say almost impossible. For Nele Symons (26) from Leuven, this seemed to doom the harsh reality to be when she is on her 19th suddenly was confronted with a ‘blurred spot’ for her eye. “It was there suddenly and was not going away,” says Nele. “Even more, the blurred spot may spread and affected my vision severely. At the age of 20 came the diagnosis. I had the disease of Stargard, a genetic eye disease that sight every day a bit more affected. For me it was a whole adjustment, of course. As a 19-year-old reed, for example, I still with the car, but that was obviously no longer possible.”
