A puncture on the infamous Arenberg-pavé, two cykelskift and a crash could not keep the belgian super talent Wout van Aert down in brostensklassikeren Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, but at last he was left totally in the lurch by his team, may very well have cost him the victory.
It takes Ekstra cykelsportskommentator, Michael Rasmussen, who is looking Jumbo-Visma-the team’s lack of view as that made the most impression in the dramatic race.
– Van Aert was completely beaten by his team and was left behind. He was fantastic running, but without help from his teammates yanked himself up, says Michael Rasmussen.
he Had been using, had he been in the finals – and then he had won. In my opinion threw the victory away, says Rasmussen.
Van Aert worked with in the seksmandsgruppe, with 50 kilometers to the targets stood out as the best, but the 24-year-old belgian had not the strength enough. It had instead Philippe Gilbert (Quick Step), who in a duel with Nils Politt (Katusha) secured the victory on the old cyklebane in Roubaix.
– There can be only three explanations for that Jumbo-Visma let Van Aert in the lurch. There may be a case of bad management, bad radio or bad team spirit, says Rasmussen.
There sat the Jumbo-Visma-riders at the back of the group as Van Aert chased. Why did they not drop back to help Van Aert? It is quite incomprehensible, for he was obviously one of the strongest in the race – perhaps also believe in the strongest, says Rasmussen.
Wout van Aert collapsed of fatigue on the velodrom, as he drove over the line. The tiredness had already set in on the last mile, after which he dumped far down in the geleddet and came in the goal as number 22.
The Danish riders in the field was as expected out of the picture in the final. There were, however, delivered solid bets of the hjælperytterne Mads Pedersen (Trek) and Mads Würtz Schmidt (Katusha), and the latter was the best dane with a ranking as number 34.
