In the summer semester, students have to dig deeper into their pockets for a room in a flat-sharing community (WG) in Hamburg than they did a year ago. This is the result of a study published on Wednesday by the Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI) in cooperation with the real estate portal WG-gesucht.de.
According to this, a room in the Hanseatic city costs an average of 570 euros in the summer semester of 2023 – that is 70 euros or 14 percent more than a year ago. Ten years ago, a room in a shared flat in Hamburg cost an average of 400 euros.
According to the study, students nationwide have to pay an average of 458 euros for a room. A year ago it was around 414 euros – so the prices increased by more than ten percent. Rent is most expensive in Munich (720 euros), followed by Berlin (640 euros).
In Erfurt, the rent rose to 352 euros, in Leipzig to 365 euros. For their survey, the MMI and WG-Gesucht evaluated 94 university locations with at least 5000 students. Market observation has been carried out since 2013.
According to the managing director of the Moses Mendelssohn Institute, Stefan Brauckmann, the increase is mainly due to higher energy costs. He urgently called for additional financial support for students who do not live with their parents. “In more and more cities, it now takes the full salary of a mini-job, 520 euros, to bear the housing costs,” said Brauckmann.
