The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), taking advantage of the trend of beach visits, has created a new edition of their sunscreen comparator. More than 20 new sun protection factor 50 and 50 products were added this year, many of which are specifically designed for children but can be used by everyone. The OCU compares the top sun creams available for less than five euros per 100 milliliters.

This list was compiled by the OCU after extensive analysis of all products in an independent laboratory. The results were then analyzed to determine their safety, efficacy and quality. OCU also verified that advertised sun protection factor was correct. They also made sure that no harmful ingredients were added to the products.

The OCU examines all products and highlights Nivea Babies high-quality protection creams for their excellent quality/price ratio.

Other products have very high ratings. These include products between 50- 50, and sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher. Cien Sun solar milk from LIDL has a rating of SPF 59 (medium quality), and is very affordable at 3.19 euros per bottle.

OCU analysis revealed that 9 out of 21 sunscreens tested contained filters that could be classified as endocrine disruptors. Two compounds that are used as chemical sunscreens include homosalate, and octocrylene. Their safety is questionable.

Homosalate, the first, is thought to be an endocrine disruptor. Analysis has revealed that homosalate can be found in 3 sun products.

Octocrylene can degrade and become benzophenone. This substance is also potentially carcinogenic or mutagenic. 7 of 21 sunscreens for kids with SPF50 contain this sunscreen.
