foreign Minister Maas has warned in his first speech in the UN security Council against the dangers of climate change for world peace. He campaigned for it, to check for all conflicts, what role global warming plays.
It is a Premiere for the German foreign Minister Heiko Maas. For the first time, he is sitting in the first row on the round table of the most powerful UN body, the security Council. To the beginning of the year, Germany assumed a non-permanent seats. Climate change as a threat to security: The topic of Germany, lying at the very heart of the Minister.
Maas shows photos taken by Astronaut Alexander Gerst last year. There are pictures of Europe. “What is this time of year, otherwise a green continent, is similar to back then a yellow-brown Steppe,” says Maas. Bad, but harmless all this was always in comparison to the consequences of climate change in other world.
“In the Sahel, conflicts are increasing because of water and Land for Agriculture is getting scarcer,” says Maas. “With the decline of the Chad lake and the livelihoods of entire population dwindling groups – a perfect breeding ground for extremism and terrorism.” And, therefore, the issue is in the Council that deals with security, to the right place.
