The Weimar Constitution is now 100 years old. The historian Jörn Leonhard explains in tagesschau.de -Interview, how much of it is still in the basic law and why our democracy is vulnerable.
tagesschau.de: At 6. In February 1919 the German national Assembly met for the first time in Weimar, in order to give the young Republic a Constitution. But the peace did not last for too long. The Weimar Republic led to the Nazi dictatorship, the Constitution is ultimately a failure. The 100 is. To celebrate the anniversary however, a reason?
Jörn Leonhard: I think, Yes. Because we are not allowed to judge the Weimar Constitution of 1919 alone of 1933, but must also acknowledge the great achievements of this Constitution from the context of 1919. For example, the fact that they created the first place once the framework for the new democracy and the parliamentary System, and under the impression of a possible civil war, and the uncertainty regarding the future of the peace efforts.
