Heksejægere sentenced to death for murder

The horrifying revenge kills on Mandri Munda and her children is, unfortunately, not unique. Not at all.

Heksejagter and the killing of ‘wise women’ or just random women is, according to the BBC widespread in Odisha and several other indian regions. There are also examples of sick children who are diagnosed as bewitched and treated with red-hot iron or scorching the clay soil.

In 2013 introduced the Odishas regional government of a new law that criminalises the ill-treatment, harassment, or accusations of witchcraft. Regular heksejagter can throw up to three years in prison.

But the effect has not been clear. The previous year registered the authorities in the region 99 heksejagter, and it was almost twice as many as in 2016.

Last year, nine indians sentenced to death for the killing of three women they suspected of being witches.
