Travel to A fort on an island in the idyllic Bay of Kotor off the coast of Montenegro is given a different destination. It will be converted into a five star hotel, but not everyone will find this appropriate due to the dark past of the building.
The Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula gave the command to build the fort on the island of Lastavica in the middle of the 19th century. The fortress which still bears his name, was during the Second world War, used as a prison by the Italian army that the region occupied.
The Mamula fort, numbered about 2,000 political prisoners. Many were starved and tortured by Italian soldiers. 130 people survived their captivity.
After the war, was the island completely abandoned and the fort fell into disrepair. To the tourist service of Montenegro in 2016, decided to set up a lease with a term of 49 years with the Orascom Group, a construction company with many hotels in its portfolio.
Montenegro hopes to be with the miljoenenproject the state treasury to food and 200 jobs. The luxury hotel will have 23 rooms to count, two swimming pools and a spa.
