Employment rose thanks to permanent employment, which increased by 616,700 people while temporary employment fell by 241,300. Unemployment fell by 255,300 people (-8.04%), bringing the total number of unemployed to 2,919,400, bringing the figure below three million for the first time since 2008. By communities, the largest quarterly decreases in unemployment are in the Community of Madrid (-59,700) and the Balearic Islands (-54,400), while compared to the same dates last year (year-on-year comparison), the largest reductions in unemployment are found in Catalonia (118,000 less) and Andalusia (-114,900).
In the second quarter there are 128,000 more active people, up to 23,387,400, which represents an increase in the activity rate of 22 hundredths and stands at 58.71%. In the last year the active population has increased by 171,900 people.
In the first quarter, unemployment rose by 70,900 people and 100,200 jobs were destroyed after adding the end of the Christmas campaign contracts, the economic effects of the war in Ukraine and inflationary tensions.
In this context, at the beginning of 2022, unemployment increased by 70,900 people, almost 2.3% more than in the previous quarter, and employment fell by 100,200 jobs (-0.5%), its smallest decrease in a first quarter since 2019, when 93,400 jobs were destroyed.
Three months later, statistics reveal that the unemployment rate stands at 12.48%, which is 1.17 points less. In the last year this rate has decreased by 2.78 points.
Between April and July, the number of employed persons increased by 383,300 people compared to the previous quarter (1.91% more) to a total of 20,468,000 employed persons. In seasonally adjusted terms, the quarterly variation is 0.61%.
In the last 12 months, employment has grown by 4.05%, with 796,400 less unemployed. Employment increased in the private sector by 397,600 more people working, while it fell in the public sector (-14,300). In the last 12 months, employment has increased by 782,100 people in the private sector and by 14,300 in the public sector.
This quarter there are 375,400 more employees than the previous one: 616,700 have permanent contracts, while those with temporary contracts are reduced by 241,300. Compared to a year ago there are 796,500 wage earners (indefinite employment increases by 1,076,300 people and temporary employment decreases by 279,800), highlights the INE. The number of self-employed workers increased by 10,000 this quarter and was practically unchanged in the last 12 months.
By economic sectors, employment has been sustained in the services sector, with 320,200 more employed persons, 79,500 in Industry and 21,900 in Construction, while in Agriculture employment falls by 38,400 people. In the last year in the Services there are 693,300 more employed persons; in Industry, 111,500; and in Construction, 13,400, while in Agriculture there are 21,700 fewer.
The largest increases in employment this quarter occurred in the Balearic Islands (80,200 more), Catalonia (63,800) and the Community of Madrid (61,200). The greatest decreases occurred in the Basque Country (-18,400) and Asturias (-5,200). In the last year, the EPA points out, practically all the communities increased their occupation, especially Andalucía (123,800 more), Canarias (121,100) and Comunitat Valenciana (119,000).
