“Dear School, I am writing to inform you about a world of screens and social media, books, strange called e-book, and whiteboards on which you do not write more with the common plaster,…”.
so Begins one of nearly five hundred articles on Republic@School came from the students to tell how the dream of the technology in their classes. Have them written in the context of a major initiative that the site of the Republic with the schools has organized for the second year with Google: with the students but aimed at all readers. Seven events with 14 video designed to learn the best way to be in that space by the full potential that is the web. “Rep@the digital 2019, Live internet better”, about the crucial issues with which we are measured daily every time we turn on a computer, a tablet or a mobile phone: from the ways to be able to distinguish the true from the false until rules to keep their personal information. From the behaviors that allow us to fight cyberbullying and spreading the kindness up to suggestions on how to share posts or images by using common sense. The videos were seen by thousands of readers and continue to be open on the web.
A kind of compass for orientation. That has turned into an amazing laboratory to listen to the boys of the Italian schools and better understand the behaviors of an entire generation.
And so, in a nutshell, as the person who is sitting on a bench would you want the class around him. To start, Francesca Rizzo (from Maglie, Lecce), the author of the letter that opens this article: “Dear school – continues – I understand that rabbrividirai… not immediately search for the negative sides, the technology has many positive sides: it would be nice and useful to be able to record all of the lectures and revise it a bit as if it were a Netflix school, revolutionary would then be the possibility of having virtual experiences inherent to the course of study, I’d like to be able to restrict the purchase of paper books and replace them with one of those gizmos in a square that you will know as a “tablet”. You will ask me: “and your homework?”, there is a solution: you will need to obtain a good application that performs the function of the notebook and the e-mail of each teacher to send any processed. What do you say? All of us students, we need a revolution… and we believe in you!”.
So as we believe Adikia (is his nickname from Cisternino, Brindisi, italy) which ends the dream of his: “Perhaps the school, which I guess is the 2090, but one important thing must not ever be missing, the teacher with their eyes, their voice and all their knowledge. Technology yes, but with us guys we will always have to be real people”.
to get To the never resolved question of the use of mobile phones. Schools do not have doubts: the answer is a categorical yes. One for all by cris2003 (FROM Gaesta, the Latin): “In school, students are forbidden from using the phone because it use bad. I would love it if in a school environment, you could use a tablet or smartphone to facilitate the study. It would be more comfortable if instead of books you could use technological tools without carrying too much weight”.
There are those who go much further, as dandy01 (Acireale, Catania): “on the internet Today the plethora of cloud services. My, how all of the classes, I can imagine it as a cloud, interactive, where you can add periodically to the material, as on the web. A virtual classroom in which everyone works together. We have the service “Classroom” Google, where is possible to insert material that is interdisciplinary, and there is greatly facilitating.”
And s1ly03 (from Lecco): “Tradition and innovation coexist today in our schools, the blackboards of slate the other hand, the lim, the texts written on paper with those written on the computer, the paper books to digital ones… We are in a real phase transition, between a few years or maybe decade, whiteboards, traditional, chalk, books, paper, folders will no longer exist. It’s a prospect that scares many people but what intrigues many, is sure to bring you many benefits”.
But there are discordant voices. Hephaestio (Milan): “At the educational level, unlike the testimonies of other students, I do not think that a tablet, or a computer can really entice you to study, but could result in the complete loss of interest in school subjects. The risks of digitisation also have implications for the privacy of the teachers and the schools. In fact, if the electronic devices are not provided by the school, may not be imposed limitations on their use as personal belongings of the student.
Finally, for a general consideration, many of the boys who reflect on the conditions of the school: “The problem of the Italian schools is that not all of us can afford to be technology at its best – writes federicoacc (Gaeta, Latina, italy) -. But then why all these differences?”.
“The Republic will fight always in defense of the freedom of information, to its readers and to all those who have at heart the principles of democracy and civil coexistence”
