To all the anti-bookworms to convince, we searched some of the health benefits of reading together and we share our favorite books of the last year. You’re welcome!

about 25% of the population reads no books. And the rest that does it, however, gives them thick wrong. Not only is it the ideal way to relax, reading helps to calm in the head, makes you happy and increases the feeling of loneliness away. This is evident from a recent survey by research firm ivox kadenza in command of Standaard Boekhandel.

It is not the first time that the science claims that reading books is good for you. An overview of the health benefits:

Read reduces stress

According to a study from 2009 reading is the ideal way to counter stress. Researchers from the British university of Sussex have then shown that reading your stress level with a 68% decrease. “It doesn’t matter which book you read. By all the way to go in what you read, you can escape the worries and stress of every day”, responded neuropsychologist David Lewis at the time.

The tv and our smartphones are our permanent allies. And we now know all that the blue light from the screens no virtue does to our night’s sleep. What a relaxing routine is that you sleepy? You guessed it: reading a book.

Read keep your brain young

As you age, so it will take the memory you put in the plug. And that can go over the smallest things, such as remembering a name or a house number. But according to studies, can read help to keep your brain fit. So would people who are young and later in life engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, suffer less from memory problems.

Birte: “I’m quite a fan of literary thrillers. The best ones I recently read are “Split” by Karin Slaughter, and “The woman after me” by Sarah Pekkanen and Greer Hendricks. Is romance more your thing? It is My Favorite Half-Night Stand’ by Christina Lauren is a must. The book is also translated, but I read books from English authors, preferably in English.”

Nathalie: “I read quite a lot, but can always in to the titles to be forgotten. The only book I really remember is ‘Kukolka’ of Lana Lux. Not for sensitive souls, but I have it in 3 days perfect!”

Birte: “I read mostly fiction, but these three non-fiction books, I want you to remember. ‘Love after love’ by Frauke Heyde is a beautiful book with poetry for the romantic souls among us, the ” #nietaankindengezinverklappen’ Hanne Luyten énorm recognizable for mama’s. And the last winner that I highly recommend, is ” I will disappear into the dark’ by Michelle McNamara. The book is about the quest for the Golden State Killer, who between 1974 and 1986 and suspected of numerous rapes and murders in California. Tragic fact: McNamara investigating this case for years and wrote so this book is about, but was already deceased at the time that the Golden State Killer last year, eventually was arrested.”

Birte: “The Australian Jane Harper brings this spring with ‘Leave’ her third literary thriller from. I have the first two, ‘The Drought’ and ‘Wilderness’, devoured in a few days, so am very curious to know number three. And I had already said that I am fan of literary thrillers? Also Karin Slaughter is coming soon with a new one, and that I am eagerly looking forward to it.”
