Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki Working on New “Nostalgic” Film

In exciting news for Studio Ghibli fans, following the recent reception of an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the studio has hinted at new, poetic stories to come.

During an exhibition at the Ghibli Museum in Japan, Goro Miyazaki, son of the renowned creator, Hayao Miyazaki, revealed to the Japanese media outlet Oricon that his father was working on new visuals and showed no signs of retiring soon:

“I don’t know if this will be for his next film, but it looks like an action-packed, nostalgic adventure that reminds us of the good old days.”

After the success of their most recent film, “The Boy and the Heron,” released in 2023, Studio Ghibli continues to thrive. With 1.5 million admissions in France and accolades including a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the studio shows no signs of slowing down.

What can fans expect from this new project? The mention of nostalgia brings to mind classic Ghibli films like “Castle in the Sky” (1986), “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988), and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (1989). On the other hand, the promise of action evokes titles such as “Princess Mononoke” (1997) and “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979), directed by Miyazaki before the founding of the studio.

Since its establishment in 1985, Studio Ghibli has produced around twenty films that have become animation classics and valuable sources of inspiration. Co-founder Toshio Suzuki expressed confidence in the studio’s ability to continue taking on new challenges, carrying on the spirit of the enterprise.

As the legacy of Studio Ghibli continues to evolve, fans can anticipate another captivating tale that captures the essence of nostalgia and adventure, drawing on the timeless magic that has defined the studio for decades.
