Freepoint Eco-Systems to Establish Plastic Recycling Plant in Belgium

Freepoint Eco-Systems Belgium and North Sea Port have recently signed a long-term concession agreement for the development of the first advanced plastic recycling facility in Europe by the American company Freepoint Eco-Systems. The plant will be located at Kluizendok, on the left bank of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, in Belgium, within the North Sea Port area. Once completed, this facility will be one of the largest plastic recycling plants in the world.

Freepoint Eco-Systems aims to build an ISCC-Plus certified plant. Spanning across 10 hectares of land, it will have the capacity to recycle approximately 80,000 tons of plastic waste per year.

The project is designed for future expansion, with land capable of supporting a total recycling capacity of around 160,000 tons of waste per year. Freepoint Eco-Systems is currently engaged in sourcing raw materials and financial planning for the project, with construction work expected to commence after the completion of the authorization process, anticipated in 2025.

“This announcement of our first site in Europe marks the next phase of our global strategy,” stated Oscar Gutierrez, President of Freepoint Eco-Systems International. “We look forward to supporting the European waste management industry by providing solutions for hard-to-recycle plastic streams. Our projects underscore our commitment to assisting the petrochemical industry in achieving its goal of developing a circular economy and meeting low-carbon raw material targets.”

In parallel, Freepoint Eco-Systems is developing a project in the United States for an even larger recycling capacity of approximately 180,000 tons of plastic waste per year, equivalent to the weight of about 9,000 semi-trailers. The first phase, scheduled to commence in 2026, will process 90,000 tons of waste to produce 65,000 tons of pyrolysis oil, exclusively sold to the Dow group. The plant will be located in Eloy, Arizona, on a 16-hectare site.

Their most advanced project is a 90,000 tons per year plant in Hebron, Ohio, which is expected to open its doors this year.
