Boijmans Reopens After 5 Years: A Unique Museum Experience

Rotterdam’s iconic Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has finally reopened its doors after being closed for five years due to asbestos removal and renovation. The museum, celebrating its 175th anniversary, is offering visitors a special five-week opportunity to explore the historic building.

During the ‘Longing for Boijmans’ event, visitors can embark on a guided tour of the museum wearing a construction helmet. Aside from glimpses of ongoing renovations, the tour showcases works by seven artists inspired by the museum’s history. However, a disclaimer warns that the experience may intensify feelings of nostalgia for the museum.

Echoes and Dreams
As visitors wander through the museum under renovation, they will encounter ‘echoes’ – reminiscent artifacts of past exhibitions – and ‘dreams,’ contemporary artworks crafted in response to these memories. These installations offer a unique blend of nostalgia and modern artistic interpretation, creating a captivating journey through the museum’s history.

Stories Bar and Children’s Gallery
In addition to the exhibition, the museum features a Stories Bar where visitors can listen to anecdotes from locals about their Boijmans experiences. Furthermore, the Kunst4Kids gallery, exclusively for children, allows young visitors to independently select and purchase artwork without adult intervention.

Rotterdam Architecture Month
Coinciding with the ‘Longing for Boijmans’ event is Rotterdam Architecture Month, with the festival hub located within the museum premises. The Henket Pavilion, a glass extension connected to the museum garden, hosts an exhibition on the museum building’s history. Visitors can also enjoy free access to the pavilion and participate in various events throughout the month.
