Film The name Parminder Nagra says you might not know something, but the film ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, in which they are the key played, you’re probably familiar with still. Also in the new Netflix movie ‘Bird Box’ is Naga. As an Indian doctor, this time. That just brings controversy because they moést talk with an Indian accent.
One is that they naturally don’t. And that punch to her fans at the shins. “That is racism”, does it sound angry on Twitter. “She speaks so totally not! The white actor who everyone wants to afknallen in the film, if his British accent, however. Why are they not? She is a British actress, a legend even, think ‘Bend It Like Beckham’. They would not have to adjust.”
Who interviews with Parminder (43) listen to or talk shows watching, where she is a guest, you will notice that the British just with an English accent speaks. Although they have Indian roots, and indeed Punjabi can speak, is English her mother tongue. She was born in the United Kingdom.
‘Bird Box’ was already in use by 45,037,125 accounts viewed on Netflix, and the incident did not go unnoticed. Parminder itself reacted to the commotion on social media.
As a fan wondering why they are in hell with an accent, had to speak, said Nagra: “God only knows.”
Continuing problem
another Indian actress, Saima Huq, reacted to the situation because they are themselves in it recognized. “During auditions, they ask me to have an accent to do. Then I always ask: ‘what accent would you like?’ To their faces, then I see that they 1) don’t know where I’m coming from and 2) their assumptions, their prejudices to betray.’”
“Stereotype casting is an ongoing problem,” she says. So Indian actors are often cast as ‘the nerd’. Think of doctors and computer technicians. “And typecasting is not an excuse. That is ridiculous, because white people are allowed to do all types of play where they themselves do not have to answer. Think ‘Pirates of The Caribbean’. I watched this film in Belize, along with the locals, and they were wondering where all the Caribbean people were… There was not one.”

It’s what the director wanted in the end. I always get asked in auditions to “Do an accent”. I make sure to ask “which accent would you like?” The look on their faces make them realize 1) they don’t actually know where I am from and 2) their assumption shows their prejudice.
