In a message posted on Twitter, the French Minister Delegate, in charge of Digital, invited “the European Commission to reconsider” the choice of an American as chief economist at the Directorate General for Competition of the Union. “At a time when Europe is embarking on the most ambitious digital regulation in the world”, this decision raises “legitimate questions”, justified Jean-Noël Barrot.

The European executive announced on Tuesday that Fiona Scott Morton, professor of economics at Yale University, had been chosen as the new chief economist at the Directorate General for Competition. She is due to take office on September 1. His appointment, however, raised a wave of indignation, while this service is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of competition in the EU and for investigating in particular the abuse of a dominant position by digital giants.
