François Bayrou assumes it: “I am not popular by saying that.” Guest of the program “Le Grand Jury RTL / LCI / Le Figaro” this Sunday, the boss of the MoDem questioned one of the main principles of the health system. “I have never been in favor of totally free healthcare or access to healthcare. I think that a small participation of those who can would be fair”, launched the High Commissioner for Planning.

While specifying that he was in favor of “care remaining free for all those who have difficulties”, François Bayrou repeated a few minutes later that he was pleading for additional financial participation from patients “from the moment they have it. the means”, without giving further details of his proposal.

The one who tried his luck three times in the presidential election recalled that France was “the country in the world which offers its fellow citizens the broadest support for all aspects of life”, citing education, health , retirement or unemployment. “But that’s not viable. It is not viable in the long term if we have the collapsed demography which is ours”, he estimated.

For François Bayrou, such a measure “would allow for example to settle the question of the price of the consultation with the doctor”, which has recently been the subject of a fierce battle between liberal practitioners and Medicare. Currently 25 euros with a general practitioner, it will increase to 26.50 euros in the fall, far from the hopes of the unions who were asking for increases ranging from 30 to 50 euros.

“We are with a price of the consultation which is ridiculous. (…) It is not fair that those who assume our health find themselves with such a low price for the consultation. Why is it so low? Because it is the community that assumes it. There is something which is not normal, which is not right, and which for the future will pose considerable problems”, developed the ex-minister.

The mayor of Pau, close to Emmanuel Macron, said he was aware that his proposal will make people talk, and not necessarily for the better. “I agree to be in the minority and to be yelled at too,” he said, observing that “nobody asks” this question in the debate today. But according to him, if we want to “rebuild our country”, we must agree “to look at the organization of society on different bases”.
